How Common is Genital Herpes ?
Results of a nationally representative study show that genital herpes infection is common in the
Genital HSV-2 infection is more common in women (approximately one out of four women) than in men (almost one out of eight). This may be due to male-to-female transmission being more likely than female-to-male transmission.
About 45 million Americans, age 12 and older have genital herpes. It’s estimated that up to one million people become infected each year. Genital Herpes (HSV-2) is more common in women than men.
In the case of female symptoms herpes generally tends to be more detrimental to a woman's health than a man's. The virus often cause outbreaks more frequently in women then in men, and the symptoms tend to be more painful and harder to treat. Even worse, a female who is infected with the virus has to worry about the chances of passing the virus on to her children during childbirth.
It is probable that the female anatomy is what causes herpes to infect women more often than men. The mucosal tissue in a female’s vagina accounts for a greater amount of surface area on women then does the male mucosal tissue on a man’s penis. Since this tissue is the part of the body that is most susceptible to the herpes virus, it’s obvious that greater surface area contributes to the greater rate of infection, and ultimately, female herpes symptoms. Additionally, the menstrual cycle experienced by women tends to lower the immune system during times of hormonal changes, which also makes it easier for the virus to infect the female’s body.
The anatomical reasons for causing infections in women more frequently than men also tend to be the culprit when it comes to making the viral outbreaks more painful for women than men. When it comes to female symptoms herpes is able to manifest itself more easily in the moist areas of the mucosal tissues than on the drier mucosal tissues of men. Because it is easier for the outbreaks to thrive in a woman’s vagina, the means of remedying the situation becomes more difficult.
