What is Genital Herpes?

Though genital herpes is not what you would call deadly, it is an emotionally debilitating and physically painful disease. Those suffering from the painful sores of genital herpes will experience feelings of regret, undesirability, shame and isolation.

Genital Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the HSV virus or the herpes simplex virus. HSV belongs to that family of viruses that also causes chickenpox, mononucleosis and shingles. There are essentially two types of Herpes viruses: HSV-1 that affects over 80% of the population in the United States, and HSV-2 that is generally found in the genitals. However, if a person with oral herpes (HSV-1) engages in oral sex, then it is very likely that his or her partner could contract HSV-1 genital herpes. And, HSV-2 could also infect a person's mouth through oral sex.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2. Most individuals have no or only minimal signs or symptoms from HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection. When signs do occur, they typically appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum. The blisters break, leaving tender ulcers (sores) that may take two to four weeks to heal the first time they occur. Typically, another outbreak can appear weeks or months after the first, but it almost always is less severe and shorter than the first outbreak. Although the infection can stay in the body indefinitely, the number of outbreaks tends to decrease over a period of years.

When symptoms do occur, they usually appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum. The blisters break, leaving ulcers or tender sores that may take up to four weeks to heal. Typically, another outbreak can appear weeks or months later.

Although the infection can stay in the body forever, the number of outbreaks usually decreases over a period of years. You can pass genital herpes to someone else even when you experience no symptoms.

Genital herpes is a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease. Features of genital herpes include pain, itching and sores in your genital area.
